Butcher and 10 Others Nabbed for Cultism by Edo Taskforce

An influential cult leader who also works as a butcher in Edo State has been apprehended by the Edo State Special Taskforce on Anti-Cultism.

Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, made this disclosure on behalf of the taskforce while presenting 11 detained cult members in Benin City.

The cult leader was taken into custody at the Ekosodin area alongside five other individuals in Ovia North East Local Government Area, mentioned Nehikhare.

On a separate occasion, three alleged cultists were arrested within the Auchi Polytechnic community on August 7, 2024, he added.

Furthermore, following a significant show of force in Benin City on August 10, 2024, the taskforce raided a hotel in Upper Sakponba where suspected cultists were convening, resulting in the immediate arrest of two suspects.

Nehikhare informed that the apprehended individuals are presently under custody as investigations proceed.

He also highlighted that the taskforce, spearheaded by the Department of State Services (DSS) and established by Governor Godwin Obaseki, is adamantly addressing the upsurge of cult-related fatalities in Edo State.

Efforts initially focused on enlightening and persuading, engaging with localities and stakeholders to discourage youth from entering cults, he noted.

While emphasizing the commitment to eradicating cultism in Edo State, Nehikhare asserted, “This is merely the start; numerous targets await, and we will not cease until every cultist is held accountable.”

He reiterated that the enforcement of the newly enacted anti-cultism law will be robust and comprehensive under Governor Obaseki’s governance.

Appealing for cultists to disavow their memberships, he cautioned that those who persist will face legal consequences and urged parents to be vigilant in guiding their children away from destructive paths.

He concluded by affirming the government’s unwavering dedication, spearheaded by Governor Godwin Obaseki, to revive peace and security in Edo State.
