Businessman in Kebbi Fatally Shot by Stray Bullet Amid Violent Protest

During a tumultuous protest in the Yauri local government area of Kebbi State, a businessman tragically lost his life due to a stray bullet.

Reports suggest that the fatal bullet, believed to have been discharged by the marine police near the Yauri River, struck the victim as he conducted his usual business of selling plastics in his shop.

Malam Umar Bako Yelwa, a resident of the locality, shared with Vanguard that the protest intensified when demonstrators obstructed the federal highway, leading to significant disruptions in the flow of traffic into Yauri town.

Allegedly, in an effort to disperse the crowd, the marine police resorted to firing shots, inadvertently causing a stray bullet to fatally wound the plastic vendor, whose identity remains undisclosed.

Despite attempts to procure a statement from the Nigeria Police Force’s Kebbi State Command, inquiries were unsuccessful as the police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, did not respond to either calls or text messages seeking input.

Meanwhile, the situation in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, has stabilized following the series of protests that had an impact on various parts of the town.
