Borno Farmer Brutally Attacked by Herdsmen, Suffers Loss of Hands

In Borno State, a horrifying incident unfolded as herdsmen viciously attacked a farmer, resulting in the severing of his hands.

The unsettling event took place on Friday in Bassam Galomari village, situated in Gubio II Ward, under the jurisdiction of Gubio Local Government Area.

Sharing this distressing news was Zagazola Makama, an expert on counter-terrorism and insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin, through a post on his social media handle the following Saturday.

Tensions escalated when the herdsmen, herding cattle, encroached upon a farm owned by a local resident.

Detailing the confrontation, Makama highlighted that the farmer tried to expel the herdsmen from his land, only to face resistance, culminating in a brutal attack that led to the loss of the farmer’s hands.

Speaking on the incident, Makama conveyed, “A disturbing episode unraveled at 1:30 pm on Friday, August 2, 2024, in Bassam Galomari Village, Gubio II Ward, under Gubio Local Government Area.

“Fulani herdsmen, accompanying their cattle, trespassed onto a local resident’s farm, sparking a standoff.

“The farmer’s efforts to remove the herdsmen met resistance, and a member of the Fulani group perpetrated the heinous act of severing both hands of the farmer.

“Prompt medical attention was provided as the victim was swiftly transported to Gubio Hospital, later being referred to Maiduguri Hospital for advanced care.

“Following this distressing incident, the area has been declared unsafe, cautioning people to steer clear of Bassam Galomari Village.

“Security agencies have been tasked with swiftly intervening to address the escalating crisis.”
