Benue Farmer Held in Custody for Alleged Attempted Murder

Remandment was ordered for Terkula Chile, a 30-year-old farmer residing in the vicinity of RCM Primary School Gwer-East Local Government Area of Benue, after he was accused of trying to kill Terzungwe Ikyeleve.

Charged with offenses including criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, causing grievous hurt, attempted culpable homicide, and criminal intimidation, Chile appeared before the Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Due to jurisdictional constraints, the defendant, Chile, did not enter a plea, as ruled by Chief Magistrate Mr. Kelvin Mbanongun.

The case was adjourned to June 11 for further proceedings.

In an earlier presentation to the court, the prosecution counsel, Inspector Godwin Ato, revealed that the case was transferred to the State CID in Makurdi on April 2 via a letter from the same date.

The letter detailed an incident where Emmanuel Kume brought his severely injured son, Ikyeleve, to the E Division Police Station in Makurdi on March 25. The victim had suffered a severed left hand and a deep head wound.

Kume reported that on the same day, the defendant, along with accomplices, unlawfully entered his farmland where his son was working and launched a violent and unprovoked attack on him.

It was alleged that the defendant had been openly bragging about sending a threatening message to the victim’s father, escalating the tension between the parties.

In addition, the complainant claimed that the defendant had explicitly warned him of imminent harm.
