Ayu drops legal challenge over PDP chair removal

Having withdrawn his lawsuit contesting his removal as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Iyorchia Ayu has opened the pathway for the former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, to assume the role as the party’s substantive Chairman.

Since 2023, the absence of a substantive National Chairman in the PDP has been linked to the lawsuit, which originated when a High Court in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, barred Ayu from holding the position of the party’s leader.

An announcement of the withdrawal of the appeal, identified as CA/MK/88/2024 SUIT NO: MHC/85/2023 and dated April 15, was disclosed by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria in Makurdi, Benue State’s capital, on Wednesday. Ayu chose to retract the appeal against the respondents, which was initially filed on June 27, 2023, through a Notice of Appeal dated June 26, 2023.

The legal dispute involved Ayu as the Appellant and Engr. Terhide Utaan and the PDP as the respondent parties.

According to the document, “The appellant herein gives notice of the full withdrawal of the appeal against the respondents filed on June 27, 2023, through a Notice of Appeal dated June 26, 2023.”
