Authorities reveal the individuals behind the BRT bus assault

The Police Command in Lagos State has announced that the individuals whose motorcycles were confiscated were allegedly involved in an assault on a BRT bus in the Orile region of the state on Wednesday.

The spokesperson of the Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday.

Hundeyin clarified that the incident was not categorized as armed robbery, but rather as a reaction by the suspected motorcyclists following the confiscation of their motorcycles.

He stated that the Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences, Enforcement Unit, conducted a crackdown on commercial motorcyclists operating on the BRT lanes and other prohibited routes, resulting in the seizure of several motorcycles.

It was alleged that certain motorcyclists, including those who resisted the police due to their status, were apprehended during the operation.

“Some of these motorcyclists became enraged and organized a protest. The nearest Lagos State Government facility they encountered happened to be a BRT bus,” Hundeyin mentioned.

“They compelled the bus driver to stop and proceeded to attack the bus. The driver opted not to confront them directly, hence he waited and disembarked the bus, allowing the riders to damage the windows of the BRT,” he added.

“While there are reports indicating that individuals were robbed while on the bus, no one has approached the police to file a formal complaint regarding this,” he concluded.
