Nabbed Ogun bandit declares 5 firearms, 110 rounds supplied by police Inspector

A man apprehended for alleged armed robbery in Ogun State has identified one Inspector Ola as his source of weapons and ammunition.

The 33-year-old suspect, Akeem Owonikoko, was apprehended by officers of the Ogun State Police Command along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Benin expressway on Sunday.

Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, informed journalists in a statement that the suspect was apprehended after a 24-hour operation led by the Ijebu-Ode Area Commander, ACP Omosanyi Adeniyi.

According to Odutola, the suspect, during interrogation, confessed and implicated the Inspector of Police, whom he simply referred to as Ola, as the individual who procured the firearms they used to carry out their activities.

She explained that Owonikoko was travelling in a Toyota Camry towards Ijebu-Ode from Ososa, but he diverted into a close as soon as he spotted the police.

“The suspect, who disguised himself in a Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) uniform and was the mastermind of several illicit activities, attempted to outsmart the policemen, but he was apprehended,” Odutola said in a statement.

A search of the vehicle he previously abandoned led to the discovery of “a black cellophane bag containing 32 spent cartridges, 78 live cartridges, and a locally manufactured shotgun.

According to Odutola: “A search warrant was also executed on his residence, where another magnum pump-action rifle, one double-barrel shotgun, one locally manufactured double-barrel pistol, a fake pistol chocker, an unregistered silver-colored Toyota Camry, and a green-colored Toyota Sienna bus marked KNN 58 TD Ogun were recovered.”

She further added that liquid chemicals, a black beret with the emblem of the Aiye Confraternity, cannabis, other illicit drugs, an ATM card, one power bank, two cell phones, two Apple wristwatches, and poisonous amulets were also seized from his residence.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, has instructed his officers to pursue the remaining suspects.

Alamutu also ordered that the suspect and the recovered items be transferred to the State CIID for profiling and forensic examination.
