Anglican bishop advises Christians to maintain a sense of God-consciousness

In a recent address, Dr. James Odedeji, the Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, emphasized the importance for Nigerian Christians to be consistently aware of God’s presence and prioritize eternal perspectives in all aspects of their lives.

Reflecting on the significance of Easter, the bishop, in a statement released on Wednesday, called on the Nigerian Christian community to honor the sacrificial act of Jesus that underpins the Easter celebration.

Entitled ‘Celebrating the Lord’s Resurrection’, Odedeji’s statement stressed the need for believers to uphold righteousness, even amidst challenging economic circumstances.

Highlighting the essence of the season, Odedeji stated, “As we once again commemorate the trial, crucifixion, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, let us not forget that it was His selfless sacrifice that paved the way to salvation for those who faithfully follow Him.”

He continued, “We must always bear in mind that Christ, the embodiment of peace, is sovereign and anticipates the arrival of His true disciples.

“In light of this, Nigerian Christians, following a period of Lenten fasting involving self-denial for 40 days, should acknowledge that this journey does not culminate here. They are to maintain a sense of God-consciousness in their conduct, whether in public or private spheres, recognizing the omnipresence of God.

“Easter serves as a reminder that righteousness uplifts a nation, while sin brings disgrace. Therefore, both leaders and followers must strive to exemplify the character of Christ and embody the faith of the believers in Antioch.”

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Nigerian Christians for being present to observe Easter, notwithstanding the prevailing economic challenges in our nation. Yet, let us hold fast to an eternal perspective as we celebrate.”
