Anambra Witnesses Normal Business Activities Amidst Absence of Protests

Activity in the commercial cities of Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka started to resume as residents opted out of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests happening nationwide.

During the early hours of Thursday, there was a partial decline in economic and commercial activities as residents stayed indoors. But as the day progressed, major thoroughfares and marketplaces began to see more movement.

Heavy security presence was noted at major markets, government facilities, and financial institutions like the Central Bank of Nigeria in Awka. However, certain places such as courts, government offices, banks, petrol stations, and some offices remained closed as workers feared potential attacks.

As the day went on, initially deserted roads and locked motor parks became lively with activities. There were no recorded protests or gatherings in public spaces, with most people choosing to stay at home in silent protest.

Both the Main Market in Onitsha and the Eke Awka market in Awka, despite being quiet in the morning, saw an influx of buyers and customers later in the day, defying the ongoing protest.

Emeka, a trader and market exco member at the Onitsha Main Market, mentioned that although there was some initial hesitation among traders, they eventually opened for business. He emphasized that there was no interest in the protest in Anambra.

In Nnewi, most stores and artisan shops were open for business as traders and youths chose not to participate in the #EndBadGovernance# protest.

A statement from the United Igbo Elders Council Worldwide commended the Southeast residents for their stance, citing the organizers’ discriminatory approach towards human rights, especially concerning the Igbo community.

The statement highlighted the need to address the oppression faced by Easterners and emphasized the understanding of the Nigerian situation, especially concerning the Igbo population.
