An official stated that the government of Kano spends N1.2 billion monthly on water supply

Providing portable drinking water in Kano metropolis costs the Kano State Government approximately N1.2 billion every month, revealed Ali Makoda, the commissioner of water resources.

In discussions with reporters on Wednesday in Kano, Makoda unveiled the breakdown of expenditures: N400 million for diesel, N387 million for chemicals, and N280 million for electricity bills.

Addressing the water scarcity issue in the state capital and its outskirts, Makoda assured that the problem would be resolved shortly, despite additional associated costs.

The obsolete equipment at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, a crucial water supplier in Kano metropolis, was singled out by Makoda as a major reason for the water shortage.

In addition to equipment issues, Makoda emphasized that the high temperatures in the metropolis contribute to increased water consumption as residents try to cope with the weather.

He criticized the previous administration for neglecting the water sector, claiming that during their tenure, only 20% of the state’s water demands were met, whereas the current administration has managed to fulfill over 60% of the people’s water needs.

Furthermore, Makoda mentioned an agreement between the state government and the French government, involving an investment of 63.4 million Euros for the construction of the third Kano Water Treatment Plant.

Expressing the government’s dedication to ensuring adequate drinking water in Kano, Makoda highlighted Governor Abba Yusuf’s substantial financial commitment towards this goal.
