According to him International Observatory for Studies on Terrorism (Oiet), in 2024 organizations such as Al Qaeda or Islamic State committed a total of 1,979 attacks around the world, leaving a trail of 10,438 people killed. And although the number of attacks fell 20% compared to 2023, victims increased to non -views since 2018.
Sub -Saharan Africa concentrates 85% of global victims for jihadist terrorism, particularly Mali and Burkina Faso. This report concludes that the Islamic State of Khorasan has become the main threat to international security, being the most active terrorist group in 2024 and with greater projection.
More attack on European soil than in 2023
The European continent doubled in 2024 the number of attacks (67 in total). That is, in Europe there were more than an attack on average week. Among all European countries, where the situation has worsened most has been in Germany. The increase in activity between lonely wolves is remarkable. The director of the Oiet, Carlos Igualada, explains that “almost 90% of the attacks in Europe during the last six years have been perpetrated by solitary wolves, mostly by stabbing.”
The detainees are getting younger
The Oiet has counted 81 detained for its link with jihadism in our country, which marked a new historical maximum since 11-M. And among those arrested, eleven minors and nine women. In 2024 the average age of the detainees was reduced, being the most common age strip among those arrested between 18 and 24 years. In Spain, 40% of the detainees were under 25.
The Oiet document explains that terrorists see windows of opportunity in international conflicts and It puts an example the instrumentalization of the Palestinian cause or the use of war in Ukraine to facilitate the transfer of terrorists and buy cheaper armament. In short, jihadists try to take advantage of the growing sources of instability of the world.
The International Observatory of Terrorism Studies also warns the problem of collection and indoctrination through new technologies.
