Allegation of Assault by Police Officer Sparks Petition to Bauchi Commissioner

A petition has been filed by businessman Jibrin Dahiru to the Bauchi State Police Commissioner, Auwal Musa Mohammed, alleging misconduct by Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdulmalik Tukur Abubakar from the Command Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

Dated April 23, 2024, the petition, titled “Complaint of Intimidation, Violence, Assault, and Harassment Against ASP Abdulmalik Tukur Abubakar of the NPF Rapid Response Squad, Bauchi State Command,” was prepared by solicitors from An-Nur Chambers, signed by MM Maidoki and Nasiru Abubakar.

The incident in question reportedly took place at Dahiru’s shop at Wunti market, where a disagreement arose with okada riders obstructing customer views. The altercation escalated when one rider refused to move upon Dahiru’s request.

The petition details, “During the altercation, ASP Abdulmalik Tukur Abubakar verbally abused and physically assaulted our client. In self-defense, our client retaliated with a slap.”

Following the incident, Dahiru tried to evade the officer, only to be instructed to wait for further instructions after reporting himself at the Police Headquarters.

Despite efforts to secure bail, delays were encountered, with the petitioner eventually being released under caution by a senior officer.

Subsequently, the petitioner was taken to S.I.B office for statements, marking the beginning of a series of events including a visit to a hospital due to alleged torture and abuse.

In the petition, it is claimed that the respondent, ASP Abdulmalik, engaged in extreme acts of violence and torture, leading to the petitioner’s hospitalization due to severe injuries.

Urging a thorough investigation, the petition appeals for justice to restore the reputation of the Police tarnished by the actions of the officer.

SP Ahmed Wakili, the command spokesman, responded that he was unavailable for comment but committed to addressing the matter once he reviews the petition.
