Akwa Ibom Governor proscribes Vikings, Black Axe, Secret Sons of Satan, Pirates, Black Ladies, other cult groups, societies

The Cultism and Other Violent Behaviour (Prohibition) Order, 2020 has been signed into law by the Akwa Ibom State Government. This move comes after recent cult-related violence and unrest in schools. Governor Udom Emmanuel has proscribed 51 cult groups and societies, in addition to the 14 other groups that were previously proscribed in 2018. The proscription order, signed by the Governor yesterday, took effect on March 16, 2020.

Governor Udom Emmanuel emphasized his administration’s commitment to maintaining the state’s safety, peace, security, and investor-friendliness, and ensuring a positive future for the youth of Akwa Ibom. The new law expands the previous law’s coverage to include additional components. It also revokes the Cultism and Other Violent Behavior (Prohibition) Order, 2018.

The order lists various prohibited cults, societies, and groups in Akwa Ibom State, including those in secondary and primary schools. It declares their activities illegal and subject to prosecution in accordance with the Cultism, Offensive Weapons and Violent Behavior (Prohibition) Law, 2004, or any other relevant law. The order was made effective on March 16, 2020.
