DHQ dismisses Yoruba nation agitation as comical

The recent clamor for the Yoruba Nation has been labeled as laughable by the Defence Headquarters.

Expressing concern, the DHQ also revealed a possible scheme by terrorists and their sympathizers to tarnish the image of the military in response to its crackdown on insurgents.

In a daring move, some Yoruba Nation activists donned military attire and attempted to seize control of the Oyo State secretariat, only to be quelled by security forces, resulting in the arrest of 29 individuals.

These suspects were subsequently brought before an Oyo State Magistrates’ Court in Iyaganku for prosecution.

They face charges including treasonable felony, involvement in unlawful organizations, illegal possession of weapons, and behaviors inciting unrest.

Addressing the media in Abuja, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, remarked that the agitation underscored the self-inflicted nature of the country’s security challenges.

Buba remarked, “The activities of IPOB in the South East have been proven to be driven by self-interest. Additionally, the demand for a Yoruba Nation is simply absurd. These instances underscore the fact that much of the insecurity in the country is a result of our own actions.”
He emphasized that taking up arms against a legitimate government is a grave offense, cautioning that severe consequences await any perpetrators.

He stated, “Such actions contravene the constitution and are therefore unacceptable. Any individual or group resorting to armed rebellion against the government is inviting swift and decisive military intervention.”

Highlighting recent achievements, Buba disclosed that the military had eliminated 192 terrorists, apprehended 341 suspects, and rescued 62 hostages over the past week.

He added, “Within this period, our forces have neutralized 192 terrorists, arrested 341 individuals, and liberated 62 captives.

In addition, 122 ISWAP/JAS militants surrendered along with their families.”

Buba further noted that 37 suspected oil thieves were captured, and stolen crude oil valued at N821m was recovered.

” Furthermore, a recovery of 211 weapons and 6,288 assorted ammunition was made, including 128 AK47 rifles, 26 Dane guns, and 1,301 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, among others,” he elaborated.

However, Buba raised concerns about a potential smear campaign by terrorists and their supporters in response to the military’s offensive against insurgents.

Buba cautioned, “It should come as no surprise that these terrorists and their allies are scheming to discredit the military because of these operations. Their plan is to depict casualties as innocent civilians rather than associated with these extremists. It’s imperative for the media to be vigilant against the strategies of these terrorist factions and their sympathizers. Our operations have thwarted their nefarious objectives.”
