Advice from UI VC: Striking a Balance Between Unionism and Academic Excellence

Student leaders at the University of Ibadan received advice from the institution’s management to effectively balance their union activities with academic pursuits.

During a retreat organized for student leaders, attendees included members of the newly elected Student Union Executive Committee, the Students Representative Council, Faculty leaders, and residential hall leaders.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Aderonke Baiyeroju emphasized the importance of maintaining academic excellence while carrying out their leadership responsibilities.

The students were reminded by the VC that leadership comes with significant responsibilities and should not be taken lightly. They were encouraged to handle their roles with maturity and purpose, fostering a peaceful and efficient administration.

Students were advised to not solely focus on confrontation, protests, and conflicts, but to also prioritize consultation and peaceful conflict resolution.

According to the VC, a balance between academic excellence and unionism is crucial for student leaders. Leadership entails grave responsibilities and should be approached with seriousness.

The VC stressed, “Everything should not revolve around confrontations, protests, and conflicts.”
