Adamawa State Government Postpones School Resumption Due to Measles Outbreak

As a response to the measles outbreak, the Adamawa State Government has decided to delay the resumption of schools for the third term.

Despite reopening schools on Monday, they were immediately instructed to shut down again and will remain closed until the following Monday, May 13.

In a circular issued on 6/5/2024 by the state Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, it was stated that, “The resumption date of third term 2023/2024 academic session earlier scheduled to be 6th May, 2024 has been postponed to next week 13th May, 2024 due to the outbreak of measles in some LGAs in the state.”

The ministry’s circular, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Aisha Umar, clarified that the delay in school resumption “aims to curb the spread of the disease and allow the Primary Health Care Agency to vaccinate the children vulnerable to measles.”

The circular was specifically directed to the Acting Secretary of the Post Primary Schools Management Board, Acting Executive Chairman of the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board, and Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Adamawa State, instructing all public and private schools to “close down accordingly.”

Earlier, on May 3, NewsNow reported that the state government had confirmed a measles outbreak in two LGAs, resulting in 42 fatalities by that time.
