Abba Kyari loses mum, Borno residents decry his absence at burial

Abba Kyari’s mother passes away, Borno residents criticize his absence at funeral

Residents of Borno State are upset that suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Abba Kyari could not attend his mother’s burial due to his imprisonment.

They are displeased that he has not been granted bail despite the bailable nature of the drug trafficking charge brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

Yachilla Imam Kyari, Kyari’s mother, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

The family’s statement announcing her demise mentioned her surviving children, including Mrs. Yana, Mrs. Kaka Hajja, DCP Abba Kyari, Mrs. Hajjja Gana Kyari, and Mr. Baba Gana Kyari.

She also left behind siblings such as Mr. Baba Goni Kyari, Mrs. Yana Ngala, Mrs. Bawa Hajja, Mr. Baba Gana, and Mr. Gimba.

She is survived by 10 children – five sons and five daughters, with Abba Kyari being the eldest son and third among the siblings.

Despite Abba Kyari’s absence, residents of Borno State turned out in large numbers to pay their last respects to Yachilla Imam Kyari, who was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic traditions on May 5, 2024.

One attendee, Mohammed, expressed his discontent, questioning the fairness of denying Abba Kyari the opportunity to attend his mother’s burial despite his service to Nigeria.

Another sympathizer named Alli raised concerns about Kyari’s whereabouts and detention, asserting that they still regarded him as part of their community.

He praised Kyari’s past contributions and expressed anticipation for his eventual release and recognition as a hero.

During the burial, a woman emotionally recalled how Kyari played a vital role in rescuing her husband from kidnappers, expressing distress over his absence at his mother’s funeral.

She criticized the decision to prevent Kyari from burying his mother, deeming it unjust and questioning his treatment.

Residents speculated that Kyari’s prolonged detention might have impacted his mother’s health before her passing.

Prior to his arrest, Abba Kyari was highly regarded as a ‘super cop’ for his efforts in combatting crime and insecurity in the country.

He has been confined in Kuje Prison, Abuja, for approximately two years now.

Recently, a youth group, One Voice Development Initiative, organized a special prayer session in Kano seeking divine intervention in Kyari’s situation.

Abbas Yakasai, the group’s convener, highlighted Kyari’s positive impact on national security and called for his release.

The group also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in Kyari’s case and facilitate his release.

They emphasized that Kyari’s absence has coincided with a worsening security situation, attributing his detention to the rise in criminal activities.
