A policeman is killed by gunmen at a checkpoint in Anambra, with one other injured

At Omata Junction on Nnewi-Oba Road in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, a group of unidentified gunmen carried out an attack on a police checkpoint.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 am on Friday when the attackers launched explosive devices at the police officers stationed at the checkpoint.

Reports indicate that in the midst of the assault, one policeman lost his life while another sustained injuries.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Friday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the situation was indeed true.

Ikenga further mentioned that the State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has issued directives for a comprehensive pursuit of the gunmen.

He elaborated, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has instructed a search operation for the assailants responsible for the attack on the police team around 9:20 am today 9/8/2024, at Omata junction on Nnewi Oba road.

“Under the guidance of the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Nnewi Area Command, an operation is already underway in collaboration with the local community to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

“Subsequently, during an exchange of gunfire with the police officers, one of the law enforcement officials was hit by an explosive device thrown by the attackers, leading to his unfortunate demise, while the other officer who sustained critical injuries is presently under medical care.

“As a result, the police force has taken control of the area, and additional information will be shared as it becomes available.”
