The former Italian politician, Emma Bonino, died this Friday in Rome, at the age of 78. This has been confirmed by the political formation Più Europa, a party founded by the leader herself.
“Emma has left us, but she will never abandon us. Today not only does our leader leave us, she leaves us one of the most lucid, brave and free protagonists in the political history of our country and the free world,” details the statement on networks.
The former European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Affairs between 1995 and 1999 had been admitted last Sunday in serious condition after suffering a deterioration in her respiratory function.
His career
He began his political activism in the 1970s in movements in favor of the legalization of abortion in Italy, at which point he ran for election under the acronym of the Radical Party.
Thus she began a long political career that led her to be a deputy for six terms, as well as Commissioner for Fisheries in 1995, Minister of European Affairs between 2006 and 2008 and Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2013 and 2014 in social democratic governments. She was a senator until 2022, her last elected position.
His party has highlighted its nonconformist character and its struggles “against everything that denies freedoms”, such as “clandestine abortion, world hunger, partitocracy, Justicialism, genocides or against all forms of authoritarianism”, in this way it has pointed out Bonino as “activist, parliamentarian, minister, European commissioner”, but “always radically free”.
His long activist career was recognized with several decorations such as the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the French Legion of Honor or the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, which he received in 1998.
