Peter Obi calls on Nigerians to confront insecurity and economic challenges

Addressing the escalating issues of insecurity and economic distress in the nation, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a passionate plea for action.

Highlighting recent incidents of abductions, such as the kidnapping of medical students in Benue and a state commissioner with his wife in Edo, Obi emphasized the urgent need to “declare war on this widespread insecurity.”

In a statement published on X.com over the weekend, Obi expressed, “When I propose that we should combat the challenges in the economy, power sector, and security, some may twist the narrative, while others simply grumble. However, what alternative do we have?

“Within the past day, numerous individuals have been abducted all over Nigeria, including approximately 20 dental students from Maiduguri and Jos in Benue State.

“A commissioner from Anambra State and his spouse were taken in Edo State, with others accompanying them meeting tragic fates. These distressing events are just a few examples of the many unfolding tragedies nationwide.”

The former Governor of Anambra State thus appealed for a united front to combat the nation’s challenges.

“We cannot persist under these conditions,” stated Obi. “The time has come for decisive measures, unwavering determination, and a cohesive stance against these adversities.”

“We must wage war against this extensive insecurity and other societal maladies that jeopardize our collective well-being, laboring diligently to construct a more secure, affluent, and equitable society for all,” he asserted.

PUNCH Online disclosed on Friday that a minimum of 20 medical and dental students, alongside a house officer, were kidnapped by armed individuals in Benue State.

The students were en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students annual convention in Enugu when they were ambushed around 5:30 pm in the Otukpo region.

Similarly, Patrick Aghamba, the Commissioner for Youths Development in Anambra State, and his wife were reportedly abducted in Edo State while journeying to Abuja on Friday.
