Tragic Flooding in Jigawa Claims 16 Lives and Destroys Thousands of Houses

Reports from the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency confirm that the recent flooding has resulted in the loss of 16 lives and the destruction of 3,936 homes.

Additionally, the floodwaters have submerged approximately 2,744 hectares of farmland due to heavy rains during the ongoing 2024 rainy season.

Speaking in Dutse on Wednesday, Dr. Haruna Mariga, the Executive Secretary of the agency, revealed that the disaster has impacted 10 local government areas in the state.

Tragically, the fatalities were caused by collapsing buildings, drowning incidents, and canoe accidents.

“This disaster has claimed 16 lives and displaced 3,936 individuals, with 2,744 hectares of farmland underwater,” he stated, cautioning that the situation could worsen with the expected heavy rainfall.

Mariga mentioned that the agency has offered temporary shelter and distributed essential supplies to assist the displaced individuals and alleviate their hardships.

The relief materials provided include rice, maize, blankets, pasta, and mats.
