Collaboration between Anambra and USAID for Plastic Waste Management

The Anambra State Government has partnered with the United States Agency for International Development, TechnoServe, and Coca-Cola to address the escalating issue of plastic waste through innovative solutions and strategic alliances.

At a stakeholders’ meeting on Plastic Waste Recycling Management held at the Hilton Leisure Hotel in Awka, the collaboration was reaffirmed. Dr Felix Odimegwu, the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, emphasized the environmental hazards associated with improperly managed plastic waste.

He highlighted the importance of properly separating and recycling plastic waste to prevent it from becoming a threat to the environment. The agenda focuses on key pillars of design, collection, and partnership to ensure effective implementation.

Odimegwu stressed the belief that every package has value beyond its initial use and should be recycled into new materials for beneficial use, thus promoting a circular economy.

Partnerships like these are essential for creating awareness about waste separation for recycling, contributing to economic prosperity through plastic recycling value chains, Odimegwu stated.

TechnoServe Nigeria’s Country Director, Mrs Adesuwa Akinboro, reiterated the need for collaborative efforts in tackling plastic pollution, emphasizing the project’s aim to mitigate environmental impact and enhance local economies.

Dr Jude Ezeanokwasi highlighted the significance of waste management policies and private sector involvement in Anambra State’s plastic waste management efforts.

The event also showcased presentations on strategic partnerships for improved waste management in Anambra State, with insights from ASWAMA’s Board of Directors Chairman, Professor Emma Ezenwaji, and senior business advisor, Franklin Nwaribe.

The Coca-Cola Foundation, a key partner in the initiative, reiterated its commitment to making a positive impact in communities globally by supporting transformative ideas and institutions addressing global challenges.
