Police officers in Nnewi targeted by gunmen, resulting in a casualty

On Friday in Nnewi, Anambra State, a group of gunmen launched an attack on a police vehicle, resulting in the death of one officer at a junction.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred around 9 am. The gunmen, upon being confronted by the officers, hurled an improvised explosive device at the police team.

The state police command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack in a press release. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered a thorough manhunt operation for the gunmen.

The attack took place at a checkpoint located at Omata junction, in the Uruagu community, along the Nnewi Oba road.

Ikenga stated, “The manhunt operation, spearheaded by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Nnewi Area Command, is actively collaborating with local residents to identify and apprehend the assailants.”
