Condolences from South-East Elders for Onyeka Onwenu, Iwuanyanwu, Ubah

July 2024 witnessed the passing of notable Igbo personalities, a cause for mourning according to the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum, an Igbo socio-cultural group.

The Chairman, Chief Simon Okeke, and Secretary, Prof. Charles Nwekeakwu, expressed sorrow over the recent deaths of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide; Senator Ifeanyi Uba, representing Anambra South Senatorial District; the music icon Onyeka Onwenu; and another respected figure, Sir Ferdinand Agu.

The elders acknowledged the impact of their loss on the community, stating, “Their departure is deeply saddening, yet we are grateful for the legacy they leave behind. We offer prayers for their families, the Igbo community, and all Nigerians affected by these irreplaceable losses.”

Regarding the recent national protests, the elders highlighted Chief Iwuanyanwu’s clarification on behalf of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, asserting that the Igbo did not participate in the demonstrations.

Emphasizing the core Igbo values of industry, justice, equity, tolerance, and respect for others, the elders affirmed the commitment of the Igbo to upholding these principles as responsible Nigerian citizens. They declared, “We mourn our fallen leaders with dignity, not through protests. Our allegiance lies in fostering a harmonious, fair, and peaceful Nigeria while expecting mutual respect in return. The Igbo community has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s progress and will continue to do so.”

Conclusively, the group sternly denounced attempts by any individual, regardless of status, to wrongly associate the Igbo with the national protests, asserting, “It is unjustifiable and provocative to disregard Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s clear stance that the Igbo are not engaged in any protests and to spread misinformation linking our people to such activities.”
