Recent operations by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) have led to the apprehension of 115 individuals suspected of involvement in human trafficking, as well as the successful rescue of 75 victims across Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers states.

Providing details in an interview with NAN in Uyo on Tuesday, Mr. Emmanuel Awhen, the Zonal Commander of NAPTIP for the region encompassing Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers states, confirmed these actions.

Over the period from July 2023 to the present, Awhen stated, “We’ve been able to apprehend 115 alleged human traffickers in the region while also rescuing approximately 75 victims.”

He continued, “Of the 75 individuals rescued, 25 have undergone empowerment programs to acquire skills in areas such as tailoring, hairdressing, barbing, and shoemaking.”

“Most of the rescued victims are currently being housed in our shelter, where they receive counseling, empowerment, and assistance in reuniting with their families,” added the NAPTIP commander.

During this timeframe, NAPTIP has taken 15 cases to court, resulting in three convictions, with 12 cases awaiting resolution, Awhen further disclosed.

In an appeal to the judiciary, the zonal commander urged judges to prioritize human trafficking cases to set a precedent and discourage other potential traffickers.

Highlighting the prevalence of rescues in coastal areas, Awhen stressed, “The fight against human trafficking cannot be solely shouldered by NAPTIP and the Federal Government; it necessitates the collaboration and support of all stakeholders.”
