The escalation of the joint offensive by the United States and Israel against Iran is an increasingly worrying issue, especially after the defenses of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) intercepted an Iranian missile in Turkish airspace this Wednesday.
Fortunately there have been no victims, which leaves aside the application of article 5 of the NATO regulations, which states that in the case of “armed attack against one of the parties, it will be considered an attack directed against all of them.” In fact, the norm indicates that “the use of armed force may be used to restore security in the North Atlantic area.”
Even so, it should be noted that Article 5 does not automatically translate into direct participation of all countries in the conflict, since a meeting of the North Atlantic Council is required to make a decision to establish what the response will be in the event of an armed attack.
What Türkiye says
After the missile interception, the Turkish Government has warned that it will respond to hostile attitudes. Turkey “will not hesitate to defend its territory and airspace” and “will respond to hostile attitudes within the framework of international law,” said the Head of Information of the Presidency, Burhanettin Duran, on X (formerly Twitter).
The remains of the projectile fell in the municipality of Dörtyol, in the Mediterranean province of Hatay. This is the first incident on Turkish soil since the start of the US and Israeli attacks against Iran. After the event, the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart, Abás Araqchi, to insist on avoiding any action that could expand the conflict, according to the EFE agency.
The Defense statement does not specify what the target of the Iranian missile could have been, but the trajectory described is consistent with a missile fired from western Iran towards the Incirlik military base, near Adana in southern Turkey. According to the aforementioned agency, this base is the main support point for other NATO allies in the country and also houses US units.
