Former CBN Governor Denies Printing New Naira Notes Worth N18.96 Billion
Godwin Emefiele, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, entered a plea of not guilty on Wednesday in response to accusations of approving the printing of N684.5 million with a value of N18.96 billion.
Emefiele made this plea during his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on four counts before Justice Maryann Anenih of the FCT High Court in Abuja.
The EFCC, in the four counts against him, alleged that Emefiele intentionally disregarded the law to harm the public while executing the naira swap policy of former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.
Additionally, the anti-graft agency accused Emefiele of illicitly authorizing the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the Federation’s Consolidated Revenue Fund.
