85 suspects arrested by NSCDC in Ebonyi within 3 months

Within the first 100 days of the new State Commandant’s tenure, the Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has apprehended a total of 85 suspects from January to March 2024.

Dr. Willie Elijah, the State Commandant, briefed journalists in Abakaliki on Wednesday about the operations conducted since he assumed office on Jan. 8, 2024.

During this period, 65 cases were reported to the command, resulting in six convictions. Furthermore, ongoing prosecutions in various stages of the court system are addressing remaining cases, with one kidnapping victim successfully rescued.

As part of the Safe School Programme, the corps, under Elijah’s leadership, has conducted patrols in schools across Ebonyi, with specially trained female squad members working incognito to safeguard students, teachers, and school facilities.

With plans to establish a creche, nursery, and primary school by September, the command is focused on enhancing security in the state. To achieve this, crack squads have been formed, while rapid response units have been re-energized.

Elijah emphasized the collaboration between the NSCDC and other security agencies in Ebonyi, working towards the common goal of safeguarding lives and property in the state. With experience gained from a previous assignment in a challenging environment such as Niger, Elijah expressed gratitude to Governor Francis Nwifuru for the substantial support extended to the command.

The State Commandant reiterated the need for continued public support to ensure the effective execution of the corps’ operations. He urged the public to perceive the NSCDC as allies, assuring that the goal is to enhance safety and security within the state.
