500 Illegal Structures in Karmo Market Demolished by FCTA

In Abuja, the Department of Development Control under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has initiated the demolition of more than 500 illegal structures at Karmo market.

Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, the director of the department, stated during the operation that the demolition was carried out after the expiry of the 24-hour notices given to the traders.

Earlier in the week, the department issued 24-hour demolition notices to operators of the unauthorized markets and shanties located along the Karmo – Dei-Dei road corridor.

Representing Galadima, Mr. Garba Jibril, an Assistant Director and the Sector Monitor for Karmo and surrounding areas, highlighted that the demolition was conducted following proper procedures.

He mentioned that the operators and owners of the illegal structures had been informed in advance and provided adequate time to remove their belongings.

The necessity of the demolition was attributed to the significant traffic congestion usually witnessed along the road corridor, particularly on market days.

According to Galadima, the Minister of FCT, Mr. Nyesom Wike, directed the removal of all illegal structures, shanties, and informal markets along the road to alleviate traffic issues and enhance the convenience of road users.

He encouraged the affected traders to consider relocating to the established market in the area, where they have offered a complimentary shop occupancy for one year before any rental charges, along with other benefits.
