Zambian government revokes license of popular TV station for ‘refusing to air free coronavirus-awareness adverts’

The license of a prominent Zambian TV station has been revoked by the government due to its refusal to broadcast free coronavirus-awareness adverts. Prime TV has reportedly declined to air these adverts, leading to the decision to revoke its license. Josephine Mapoma, Director-General of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, cited the decision as necessary in the interest of public safety and stated that the TV station has the right to appeal to the ministry of information and broadcasting services. The cancellation was made under the provisions of the IBA (amendment) Act of 2010. Owner of Prime Television and chairperson of the Zambia Independent Broadcasters Association, Gerald Shiwa, alleged that media owners were reluctant to air the advertisements due to outstanding advertising debts owed by the government. He also accused the government of targeting his station and barring it from covering events while instructing its agencies to cease advertising on the station.
