World Theatre Day Celebrated in Lagos

Encouraging the creativity of its people, the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture affirms its commitment to raising awareness.

During the 2024 World Theatre Day celebration, the Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr Idris Aregbe, expressed Lagos’ determination to prioritize arts, theatre, and culture.

The event featured vibrant theatrical performances, dances, and music by students in honor of World Theatre Day 2024.

This year’s theme for the Day is ‘Theatre and Culture of Peace.’

Idris expressed joy in involving the younger generation of artists in the artistic and cultural development.

“Lagos tourism is flourishing, and we are committed to showcasing the best of our arts and culture. Our government values tourism and arts.

“There is more to be done in promoting Lagos as a hub for theatre. We are broadening our horizons, which is evident from the diverse stakeholders present here.”

Renowned actress, Mrs Taiwo Ajai-lycet, stressed, “The entertainment industry is pivotal in Nigeria, shaping its future. Focusing on Nigeria’s creative industry is a recipe for success. Prioritizing entertainment means prioritizing the people.”

She urged the government to collaborate more with entertainers, especially at events like this.

“Politicians should consider this seriously. They need to provide more support for the arts by involving entertainers in such initiatives.”

The celebration at Alliance Française in Ikoyi showcased performances representing the various ethnic groups in the state.

The Saxophone Hub presented instrumental renditions of songs by late Victor Uwaifor, late Victor Olaiya, and Simi.

Additionally, Segun Afefila’s Crown Troupe of Africa performed a play advocating for Nigerians’ active contribution to the nation’s development.

The Lagos State Troupe delivered a playlet titled ‘Oshodi,’ portraying Oshodi as a place of movement, prosperity, and challenges.

Chairman of the Lagos State House Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr Solomon Bonu, reassured stakeholders of his unwavering commitment to industry development.
