Why Lionel Messi Rejected a €1.4bn Offer from a Saudi Arabian Club Before Joining Inter Miami

Al-Hilal made a staggering offer to Lionel Messi to lure him to their club, but the Argentine superstar chose to join Inter Miami, as confirmed by the president of the Saudi Pro League outfit.

Following the expiration of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain in June 2023, Messi was in high demand with several clubs vying for his signature.

Despite rumors linking him with a return to Barcelona, Messi decided to extend his career in Major League Soccer (MLS) instead.

Anmar Al Haili, president of Al-Hilal, disclosed the extent of the club’s offer to Messi, hoping to pair him up with fellow legend Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking to NIBC, Al Haili revealed, “We approached Messi as his contract in Paris came to an end. We put forth an offer of €1.4 billion, but he declined as his family desired a move to America.”

He added, “It’s remarkable that Messi turned down such a lucrative deal for the well-being of his family. While he eventually convinced them, he didn’t waver in his decision. We respect his stance as he prioritized family over financial gains.”
