WHO: More than 775 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 since its inception

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the global tally for confirmed COVID-19 cases has surpassed 775 million, with over seven million deaths recorded since the onset of the pandemic as of July 21, 2024.

This information was disclosed in a statement released in Abuja.

Within the 28-day timeframe from June 24 to July 21, the number of new cases and fatalities globally escalated by 30% and 26%, respectively.

Compared to the previous 28-day period spanning from May 27 to June 23, where over 186,000 fresh cases were reported in 96 countries (a 41% increase), along with more than 2,800 new deaths in 35 countries (a 15% rise).

As of July 21, 2024, WHO reported that over 775 million confirmed cases and seven million deaths have been documented globally since the pandemic began.

During this same period, data was provided by 46 countries on COVID-19 hospitalizations and by 35 countries on admissions to an intensive care unit (ICU) at least once.

The available data indicated an addition of more than 23,000 hospitalizations and over 600 ICU admissions.

According to WHO, among the nations consistently reporting data over the recent and previous periods, there was an overall rise of 11% in new hospitalizations and 3% in new ICU admissions, respectively.
