We stand by our decision — Airlines insist on shutting operations over increased price of aviation fuel

The decision to shut down operations over the increased price of aviation fuel is being upheld by airlines. The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have maintained their stance on suspending domestic flights starting from Monday, May 9, due to the surge in the cost of aviation fuel. Despite the federal government’s plea for consideration of the impact on travelers, the AON emphasized that they are not on strike but are facing a significant rise in operational costs, with JetA1 priced at N700 per litre, leading to a 95% daily cost increase.

In a jointly signed statement by key figures from various airlines, the AON expressed unwavering support for their decision. They emphasized their commitment to protecting the flying public and highlighted the collective sacrifice being made for the nation’s interest. The statement also addressed the situation of Ibom Air, a member that chose not to align with the collective decision, acknowledging the existential threat posed by the escalating JetA1 prices and emphasizing the unsustainability of the current situation.

The AON clarified that the airlines are not on strike but are private investors facing the challenge of bearing the increased fuel costs. They underscored the unsustainability of the situation and its potential consequences for passengers. The statement concluded with a plea for understanding from passengers as the airlines remain determined to find a lasting solution to this critical issue.
