We did not obtain a land title certificate or a building permit for the new property – Nigeria admits mistake on demolition of Nigerian Embassy staff quarters in Ghana

The recent demolition of Nigerian Embassy staff quarters in Ghana has prompted Nigeria to acknowledge its failure to obtain a land title certificate or a building permit for the new structure at the Nigerian High Commission in Accra. Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, admitted the mistake but emphasized that it did not justify the demolition.

He revealed that the Ghanaian government has taken responsibility for the demolition and assured that the structure will be rebuilt to its original state. Onyeama attributed the demolition to an error on the part of the Nigerian High Commission and stressed the need for improved documentation and record-keeping processes.

He mentioned that the necessary administrative procedures, including obtaining title deeds, should have been completed, and the Ghanaian government has directed that these procedures be carried out. This development signifies the acknowledgment of payment for the property by the Ghanaian land registry many years ago.

The admission of the mistake by the Nigerian government is a significant step in addressing the demolition of the Nigerian Embassy staff quarters in Ghana.
