Warning from Lagos Health Commissioner about a highly aggressive, contagious cholera strain

The Lagos State Health Commissioner, Prof Akin Abayomi, has confirmed that recent disease outbreak in the state is cholera, with a highly aggressive and contagious strain identified.

In a statement on Monday, Abayomi mentioned that the strain has the potential to spread widely.

By conducting community-based case finding and contact tracing, the number of cases has reached a peak and is now decreasing.

In his message, Abayomi stated, “Laboratory tests have confirmed that the outbreak is due to cholera. The identified strain is highly aggressive and contagious, with potential for widespread dissemination.”

He further shared, “The suspected cases are distributed across various Local Government Areas, with Lagos Island being the epicenter with 106 cases, followed by Kosofe with 49; Eti-Osa with 38; Lagos Mainland with 30; and other areas.”

Abayomi also mentioned that, “A total of 350 suspected cholera cases were reported in 29 wards in Lagos State, with 17 confirmed cases and 15 deaths, mainly due to severe dehydration resulting from delayed treatment.”
