Violence Erupts in Nigeria as EndBadGovernance Protest Turns Deadly

The ongoing EndBadGovernance protest in Nigeria has escalated, prompting a red alert from the country’s Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

Reports from NewsNow reveal that Nigerians in various states, including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, took to the streets as the 10-day protest against the nation’s hardships kicked off.

However, the first day of the protest saw widespread violence and looting in major cities, resulting in casualties among protesters.

Violence erupted in several states including Kano, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, FCT Abuja, Niger, Jigawa, and Nasarawa, leading some states to impose curfews in an effort to restore order.

In a press conference, the IGP criticized the protest organizers for their absence during the chaos and urged them to halt the protest.

He emphasized the earlier intelligence reports that predicted a violent turn of events during the protest.

The IGP stated, “Despite our suspicions, we showed good faith through professional conduct by providing security at strategic locations all aimed at ensuring peaceful conduct during the protest as the promoters pledged.”

He continued, “We remain committed and resolute to protecting lives and property and ensuring that law and order are maintained across the nation.”

As the situation unfolds, the Nigeria Police Force has heightened security measures and mobilized all units to swiftly address any threats to public safety and order.

The IGP warned that the police are prepared to respond decisively to any further disruptions and will collaborate with other security agencies, including the military, if necessary.

Citizens were urged to remain calm, cooperate with the authorities, and prioritize safety during this challenging period.
