A vigilante member allegedly shot and killed a father in Eyenkorin, outskirts of Ilorin, Asa local government area of Kwara state.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening, April 28. The vigilante member, identified as Sule, allegedly shot a commercial driver named Idowu after he refused to pay a N5,000 bribe.

Idowu, who had survived a recent auto crash, was returning from a trip to Ibadan, Oyo State, in defiance of the COVID-19 lockdown when he was stopped by Sule and his colleagues. They demanded the N5,000 bribe which Idowu resisted, leading to an argument and ultimately the shooting.

After committing the crime, Sule reportedly fled with his family. The deceased has been deposited at the General Hospital Ilorin morgue following a police complaint lodged by the family.

Idowu, survived by his three-month-old son, wife, and an aged mother, is the victim of this tragedy.

According to the state police command spokesperson, Ajayi Okasanmi, the local vigilante officer is on the run, and the community association that engaged the officer has been invited for questioning. Investigation is ongoing.
