Victor Ezeji: Eagles facing no crisis

According to former Nigerian forward Victor Ezeji, the Super Eagles are not experiencing a crisis in the attacking department despite injuries to two strikers. He expressed confidence in the capability of Victor Osimhen, as reported by Saturday PUNCH.

Sadiq Umar was recently replaced by Paul Onuachu for the 2023 African Cup of Nations, following Umar’s knee injury in Nigeria’s 2-0 friendly defeat to the Syli Stars of Guinea. Victor Boniface was also replaced by Terem Moffi for the same competition, scheduled to commence today in Ivory Coast.

The official Super Eagles account announced the replacement of Umar with Onuachu, who missed the previous edition of the competition due to an injury. Onuachu, with nine goals and three assists in 15 games for Trabzonspor this season, joins the squad with previous experience at AFCON 2019.

Ezeji, a former Enyimba forward and two-time African Champions League winner, emphasized that the replacements were strong strikers and the team needed to improve in providing opportunities for them.

He mentioned, “I don’t think there is a crisis, because the other guys they have called up are good strikers as well. It is just that the Super Eagles have not utilized someone like Onuachu’s potential, he has a good height, and most of his goals are with his head, but anytime he plays with the Super Eagles, wide players like (Samuel) Chukwueze and Moses Simon fail to bring the crosses for him.”
