Venezuela after the arrest of Maduro, live: The Venezuelan government announces the release of a significant number of prisoners

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has once again congratulated journalists on the operation against Venezuela in which Nicolás Maduro was captured and has stated that United States control over the country could last for years: “Only time will tell,” he said.

These statements come a day after the president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, has defended commercial relations with the United States despite the “stain” left by Maduro’s capture.

The US has also warned that it will control the sale of Venezuelan oil for an “indefinite” period and will deposit the proceeds from these transactions in accounts managed by Washington. In fact, in the last few hours it has intercepted a Russian-flagged oil tanker for what it considers “violations of US sanctions” as it is supposedly part of the ‘ghost fleet’ that Moscow uses to circumvent sanctions on the energy sector in Venezuela.

During this Thursday afternoon, the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced the release of a significant number of prisoners, among whom there could be Spaniards, as a “gesture of peace.”
