It was in jail where she brought him food and shared a meal with him. Later, he discovered that she had been aware of him all along and had intended to meet him.

In a tweet, he wrote, “I met my wife in jail after being arrested during a civil rights march. She brought me food and shared a hamburger with me. Turns out, she knew who I was and had been plotting to meet me for some time. We were married for 58 years.”

James Clyburn’s spouse, Emily Clyburn, passed away in September 2019, marking 58 years of marriage. A street in Columbia, SC has been renamed in her honor.
