Urgent Warning to High Chiefs from IBILE G-7: Keep Politics Away from Olubadan Succession

High Chiefs in Ibadan have been cautioned by the non-political group IBILE G-7 to guard against the interference of politics and politicians in the traditional institution of the ancient city.

A statement conveying this warning was issued by the group and signed by Comrade Lanre Ogundipe, its Coordinator and former President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and Olajide Laniyonu, its Secretary.

This statement was shared with NewsNow on Wednesday.

Following the passing of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Mahood Olalekan Balogun, the Olubadan stool is now vacant, with High Chief Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin being next in line for the position based on tradition.

Recently, a meeting called by the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, to commence the process for Olakulehin’s installation was boycotted by other High Chiefs.

IBILE G-7 emphasized the importance for the High Chiefs to uphold the sanctity of the Olubadan stool and resist any attempts of political manipulation.

The group emphasized that the actions of High Chiefs involved in the current controversies could disrupt the traditional kingship process of Ibadan.

According to IBILE G-7, “High Chiefs engaging in these unwarranted tensions could be seen as undermining the established authority and the smooth transition in appointing the new Olubadan.”

The group urged the High Chiefs to consider the potential consequences of their actions on the selection and constitution of Kingmakers in Ibadanland.

IBILE G-7 also highlighted previous warnings from prominent Ibadan elites regarding the integration of individuals with questionable backgrounds into the city’s chieftaincy hierarchy.
