Urgent Meeting Request for the Revival of Gbarain Power Plant in Bayelsa State

Calling upon Vice President Kashim Shettima to convene an emergency meeting, the House of Representatives seeks the revitalization of the Gbarain Power Plant in Bayelsa State to boost the efficiency of the national grid.

Shettima, who also serves as the Chairman of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Board, has been urged to take immediate action.

A motion presented during plenary on Thursday by Hon. Oboku Oforji prompted the House to summon the Managing Director of NDPHC, Mr Joseph Ugbo, to clarify the current state of the Gbarain Power Plant.

According to Oforji, the Gbarain Power Plant, situated in Koroama, Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, is a crucial facility capable of generating at least 252 megawatts.

Highlighting the significance of the plant, Oforji noted that its potential to operate as a combined cycle gas turbine configuration adds to its value for future energy needs.

Concerns were raised regarding the fire incident that led to the loss of the Power Control Module at the facility, underscoring the urgent need for intervention.

Emphasizing the critical role played by the Gbarain Power Plant in supplying electricity to the Niger Delta University and surrounding communities, Oforji emphasized the importance of its rehabilitation.

Expressing dismay over the NDPHC’s proposal to repurpose the power station as a construction site rather than focus on its operation, Oforji questioned the management’s approach towards maximizing the plant’s potential.

With substantial gas resources allocated to the plant by the Shell Petroleum Development Company, concerns were raised regarding the underutilization of these resources due to operational challenges.

It is essential for the NDPHC to prioritize the efficient functioning of the Gbarain Power Plant to ensure reliable power supply for the region and beyond.
