Updates on Recent Events: Osun Protesters Withdraw, Military Prevents Niger Market Attack

The Concerned Nigerian Citizens, EndBadGovernance group, after six days of protest in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, has decided to suspend further demonstrations. The state Coordinator, Adetunji Ajala, explained that this decision was made in light of the upcoming Osun-Osogbo festival, which is expected to draw a large number of visitors and tourists.

Ajala emphasized the importance of preventing violence and chaos by halting the protest to avoid infiltration by miscreants. He expressed disappointment in the President’s recent address, stating that none of their specific demands were addressed, despite presenting them clearly.

He also mentioned that their demands were conveyed to the Governor of Osun State through the deputy governor and Secretary to the State Government, with assurances that their demands would be forwarded to the Federal Executive Council. Considering the security concerns during the ongoing Osun-Osogbo festival, they deemed it necessary to pause the protest on August 6, 2024.

In a separate incident, protesters in Niger State attempted to breach the Suleja Modern Market following the alleged killing of six protesters on August 1. However, their efforts were thwarted by soldiers deployed to prevent violence and vandalism.

Despite their determination to cause chaos in the market, the protesters were met with resistance from security forces, mainly soldiers, at the Suleja Junction along the Kaduna-Suleja-Abuja highway.

The nationwide protest, initially peaceful, turned violent with the reported deaths of six individuals on the first day. Subsequently, the Monday protest was fueled by a desire for retribution for the slain protesters.
