Update: Woman accused of withholding 5-month-old baby of her employee shares her own side of the story, accuses the young mum of neglecting her child (video)

A woman accused of holding onto her employee’s 5-month-old baby, who has sadly passed away, has given her account of the events, claiming that the baby’s mother neglected him.

Mrs. Tina Ugbonaya gave an interview with Punch, stating that the child lacked maternal care as Gift, the mother of the baby, had allegedly abandoned him just a month after birth. According to Mrs. Ugbonaya, Gift had left for the village, stating that her uncle had enrolled her for a WAEC examination and she needed to go and sit for the exam.

Furthermore, Mrs. Ugbonaya claimed that Gift refused to give the baby food or breast milk and ultimately left their home when confronted about neglecting her child. Mrs. Ugbonaya asserted that she took the baby boy to a nurse for care and paid the nurse N30,000 due to the child’s emaciated state from Gift’s neglect. She vehemently denied holding the child captive, with her husband corroborating her claims of neglect by Gift.

In contrast, Gift claimed that she was well taken care of by Mrs. Ugbonaya’s husband when she initially arrived in Lagos from the village. According to her, after returning from the village, she faced maltreatment from the couple, with Gift alleging that she was ultimately forced out of their house. Additionally, Gift mentioned that when she inquired about reclaiming her baby, she was informed that she needed to pay an alleged N200,000 hospital bill, which later escalated to N5 million.
