A patient in need of a heart transplant has been rejected by a US hospital because he is not vaccinated against Covid-19.

DJ Ferguson, 31, requires a new heart, but Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston removed him from their transplant list.

David Ferguson spoke to CBS 4 and mentioned that his son, D.J., was taken off the transplant list at Brigham and Women’s Hospital because he refused to get vaccinated against COVID-19, which goes against his beliefs and principles.

The hospital defended its stance, stating it was following policy, and mentioned that it does everything possible to ensure the best chance of survival for transplant recipients, especially given their suppressed immune system after the operation.

According to the hospital’s website, transplant candidates must also receive the seasonal influenza and hepatitis B vaccines, adhere to healthy behaviors, and demonstrate their commitment to taking necessary medications post-procedure.

The spokesperson for Brigham and Women’s Hospital reiterated the policy, emphasizing that patients are not active on the waitlist without meeting the vaccination and lifestyle behavior requirements set by the Mass General Brigham healthcare system.

DJ Ferguson’s family disagrees with the hospital’s vaccine policy and is actively exploring alternative options.

David Ferguson expressed his admiration for his son’s courageous fight and unwavering principles, amid the debate sparked by the hospital’s decision.
