University Professor Proposes Solution to Cybercrime in Nigeria

A computer expert and professor at a university, Professor Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, has called on the Nigerian government to support the use of biometric technology in public places as a means to combat cybercrime in the country.

Professor Rasheed also recommended the implementation of fingerprint authentication in all educational processes within the university system to prevent cases of impersonation and enhance campus security.

He suggested that students’ biometric data could easily be collected from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).

These recommendations were made during Professor Rasheed’s 239th inaugural lecture at the University of Ilorin. The lecture, titled “Deconstructing The Crawling Mindsets: Combatting Security Challenges of Net-Centric Computing,” discussed the need for incorporating ICT and advanced security measures in Nigeria.

In his lecture, Professor Rasheed emphasized the importance of keeping up with global advancements in the digital era to avoid falling behind competitors. He stressed the necessity of implementing information security management ethics, cybersecurity techniques, and reliable authentication systems to mitigate cybersecurity challenges and ensure secure operations.

Furthermore, Professor Rasheed highlighted the need for sophisticated authentication methods in financial transactions to prevent fraud. He also called for increased research efforts to enhance security in Grid-based computing environments, ensuring sustainable quality of service.

Additionally, Professor Rasheed urged the government to allocate funds for promoting cultural adaptation to the digital era, with a particular focus on utilizing Nigerian languages.

Lastly, he advised organizations to invest in hiring experts in information and cybersecurity who receive adequate training and continuous education, given the dynamic nature of the field.
