UNIBEN Implements Ban on Hot Plates and Ring Boilers Due to Electricity Tariff Hike

Recently, the University of Benin management made a decision to restrict the use of hot plates, ring boilers, and gas cookers in its hostels as a measure to reduce the escalating energy costs faced by the university.

In a circular signed by the Registrar, Ademola Bobola, the university emphasized that any individual found disobeying this directive would face expulsion from the institution.

The move to enforce this ban is closely linked to the electricity crisis that adversely impacted the university, with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) notably increasing the monthly billing from N88 million to N250 million.

As a consequence of this contentious billing, BEDC authorities disconnected power supply to the university’s two campuses, leading to a student protest on July 3 following weeks of power outages and reliance on generators for electricity.

Subsequently, the university’s Senate took the decision to temporarily shut down the institution to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order.

Upon announcing the University’s reopening in a subsequent circular, Bobola emphasized the need for students to adhere to the stipulated guidelines regarding the usage, distribution, and payment for electricity across the campuses.

Additionally, students were instructed to settle any outstanding dues to ensure eligibility for upcoming examinations, with strict monitoring to ensure compliance with this directive.

The Registrar also underscored the importance of students maintaining good conduct and refraining from participating in any unauthorized activities or demonstrations within the university’s vicinity.
