UNIBEN Implements Ban on Hot Plates and Gas Cookers in Hostels Following Electricity Tariff Hike

In an effort to reduce rising energy costs, the University of Benin has prohibited the use of hot plates, ring boilers, and gas cookers in its hostels.

A circular signed by the Registrar, Ademola Bobola, warned that students found violating this prohibition would face rustication.

This decision comes in the wake of an electricity crisis at the university, triggered by a significant increase in the monthly billing by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) from N88 million to N250 million.

As a result, the BEDC disconnected power supply to the university’s two campuses, leading to protests by students on July 3 due to prolonged power outages.

Subsequently, the university Senate decided to temporarily close the institution to prevent any disruption in the peace and order on campus.

Upon announcing the university’s reopening, Bobola emphasized the need for students to comply with the management’s electricity usage guidelines and settle any outstanding fees to be eligible for examinations.

He also reminded students to conduct themselves appropriately and refrain from engaging in any unauthorized activities or demonstrations within the university premises.
