Underrated Super Falcons Ready For Critical Match Against Ireland

The Super Falcons of Nigeria were “undervalued and unappreciated” before the Women’s World Cup but have disproven their critics, stated coach Randy Waldrum ahead of today’s crucial Group B match against the Republic of Ireland.

Nigeria surprised Australia with a 3-2 triumph in their previous game and currently lead the group with four points. Even a draw against Ireland, who have already been eliminated, would guarantee their progression to the round of 16, regardless of the outcome of the second and final group B match between Host Australia and Canada.

“We have demonstrated that we are a superior team than our world ranking of 40,” expressed Waldrum to reporters. Despite his statement, Waldrum acknowledges the upcoming challenge against Ireland, who narrowly lost their first two games against Australia and Canada and were unlucky not to achieve better results.

“It is going to be an extremely arduous match. People may find it difficult to believe, but I believe this could be our most challenging encounter. Ireland have had some bad luck in the first two matches and could have obtained better outcomes,” he remarked.

“We are not anticipating an easy match just because they are already out of the tournament. Instead, I expect them to give their best. I have been greatly impressed with their team and their organization,” Waldrum added.

One of the standout performers for the Super Falcons in the tournament has been goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who represents Paris FC and made vital saves in the first two matches, including a penalty save in the goalless draw against Canada.

“Chiamaka has been an integral part of our team since I took charge. She is a young player who keeps improving every year,” praised Waldrum.

“Whenever I compile my list of the top 100 players in the world for the BBC, she is always among the best goalkeepers, and I believe she will only continue to improve.

“Many people in France are already aware of her abilities, but now I think the rest of the world will see. She made fantastic saves against Australia as well and has contributed significantly to our success,” he added.

Waldrum also expressed confidence in leading forward Asisat Oshoala, who has been dealing with persistent injuries for some time.

“She is making significant progress. We made the right decision by managing her playing time, and we might have to do the same in this match. She will definitely be on the field, but we will need to assess how long she can play,” the coach revealed.
